The European mole is a mammal of the order Eulipotyphla. It is also known as the common mole and the northern mole. This mole lives in an underground tunnel system, which it constantly extends. It uses these tunnels to hunt its prey (worms).
Moles are active all year round but cause nuisance in the form of ground damage mainly during the rainy seasons. The tunnel system runs on three different levels. When the ground is wet after rainfall the worms move towards the surface and the moles catch them in the middle and top tunnel. When the ground dries up the worms go deep and the moles then start catching them in the bottom tunnel.
Our preferred method of control is the use of approved spring traps, normally the talpex or the duffus. When locating the traps in the ground, we are very precise to avoid damaging your grounds by removing the exact amount of turf by using a serrated knife to cut out the shape of the trap.
We are fully trained in the safe use of aluminium phosphide (GAS) for mole control. However, we do not recommend this form of control due the associated risks to the public as the gas may remain active for up to 48 hours in certain ground conditions.
